What are Beacons and Equipment?
Virtually any piece of equipment can be equipped with a TELUS Geotab and Raven BLE Beacon. That equipment will be considered equipment within the MyGeotab web interface. When you buy beacons, they are automatically linked to your account. Each beacon comes with a charged battery, screws, zip ties, and adhesives for a variety of installation options. Just turn on your beacons, pair them and you’re all set to start monitoring your equipment.
Installing Beacons
Before you can start using beacons, you must power them on.
- To power on your beacons, simply twist the cap counter-clockwise to remove it, then hold the white power button until you see a dim blue light. Once powered on, place the cap on top, then twist it clockwise to secure it.
- You can use BeaconSET Plus on iOS or Android to see if your beacon's Mac address is listed. This is another way to confirm that your beacon is powered on.
- Use the provided screws, zip ties, or adhesive to secure the beacon to your equipment.
Note: If you want to power off your beacons, follow step 1 again, but hold the white power button until the dim blue light stops flashing. Once powered off, place the cap on top, then twist it clockwise to secure it.
Setting Up Beacons
- Before setting up your beacons, you must first create equipment to pair it to. Click "Add-Ins", from the left side menu, select "Manage Beacons", then "Add Equipment".
- The 'Equipment Details' panel will open. Enter the equipment's Name. You can also define the Make, Model, Serial Number, and Description if you wish, these are optional fields.
- Click the "Beacon" drop-down and select a beacon to pair with your equipment (all unpaired beacons will be listed here). The beacon’s Mac address (located below the QR code) can be used to identify it.
- Click “Add”.
Managing Equipment
Know Where Your Equipment Is
Equipment must be paired with a beacon to be located. When beacons are within range of a Raven camera, the GPS and cellular module capture the equipment's position and time/date at which that detection was made, providing an update to the Geotab web app every 5 minutes.
On the Equipment tab, columns for Details, Beacon, Battery, Report Time, Reported By, Location, and Zone are present.
- Details: Make, Model, Serial Number, and Description as you've defined for the equipment.
- Beacon: The beacon you have paired with the equipment.
- Battery: The beacon's last reported battery level.
- Report Time: The date/time they were last seen.
- Reported By: The Raven the equipment last reported to.
- Location: The location where the equipment was last located.
- Zone: The Zone in which they were last located (if applicable).
Edit Equipment
You can edit defined details or unpair a beacon by clicking on the equipment's name from the Equipment tab. Select "None" to have no beacon assigned or choose another beacon. Once you have finished making changes, click “Save”.
Delete Equipment
You can delete equipment from the Edit Equipment page by clicking "Delete". This will also unpair the assigned beacon (if applicable).
Managing Beacons
- To manage your beacons, click "Add-Ins" from the left side menu, select "Manage Beacons", then "Beacons". Here, you can see what equipment your beacons are paired with.
- Use the respective toggles to switch between visible/hidden, and all/assigned/unassigned beacons.
- Click “Hide” if you lost a beacon and don’t wish to see it anymore.
- If you find a lost beacon, you can unhide it by viewing hidden beacons and clicking “Unhide”.
Replacing Batteries
If a beacon battery dies, they are easy to replace. CR2477 3V Lithium Batteries can be purchased from anywhere batteries are sold.
- To replace a battery, simply twist the cap counter-clockwise to remove it, gently move the foam out of the way, push the old battery out, then put a new one in its place.
- Once replaced, ensure the foam is positioned between the battery and cap.
- Hold the white power button until you see a dim blue light. Once powered on, place the cap on top, then twist it clockwise to secure it.
- You can use BeaconSET Plus on iOS or Android to see if your beacon's Mac address is listed. This is another way to confirm that your beacon is powered on.
