Setting up Raven
Each Raven+ you’ve received has been shipped already pre-assigned to your account and includes an LTE SIM card already installed.
If you are new to Raven, be sure to check out the Raven Getting Started Guide for an overview of all the great things you can do with Raven.
If this is your first set of Raven+ units and you haven’t set up your account before, you will:
- Designate one person to be the Raven Fleet Manager. This will be the person who controls access to each Raven+ and who can monitor all the Raven+ units on the Mobile and Web Apps (telus.ravenconnected.com).
- Install Raven+ in your vehicles using the instructions contained in the Raven Installation Guide.
- A temporary account password has been sent to you. Use this password to log in to the Web App (telus.ravenconnected.com). You will be prompted to change your password.
- Once these steps are complete, you are ready to start monitoring your fleet.
If you’re adding more Raven+ units to your existing account: Each additional Raven+ will be delivered pre-assigned to your account and pre-provisioned. Install Raven+ into your vehicles using the instructions contained in the Raven Installation Guide, and they will “just work”.
The Web App
To connect to the Web App:
- Point your browser to telus.ravenconnected.com
- Sign in using your Raven credentials: Email (User Name) and Password
Vehicles Tab
When you log in to the Web App, the first thing you will see is a dashboard view of your fleet. This is your live view into the current status of your fleet. Click on the ‘Vehicles’ menu item in the top right corner to return to the dashboard if you’ve opened another view.
The pop-out from the menu on the left is where you will see a Vehicle List and a quick-view status of all your vehicles. Click on a vehicle in the list to highlight it in the map view. Clicking on the check boxes beside the vehicle will add/remove the vehicle from the map view. From the search bar, you can also search by name for a vehicle. You can also select ‘Show All’ or ‘Hide All’ to view or eliminate all vehicles on the map.
When you click on a vehicle in the list, more details about that vehicle are displayed in the Vehicle Details on the left side.
Highlighting a vehicle will also display the vehicle's Event List and camera views. Clicking on an Event in the list will bring up the preview image/video associated with that Event.
On the right side of the Map View are controls for zooming, showing your location, zooming to the highlighted vehicle, and toggling satellite and traffic layers.
Live Streaming and Recording
The Preview images you see in the Vehicles Tab refresh once every two seconds when the car is being driven. When parked, the Preview images refresh once every 15 seconds. On the Preview panel, you will see a new button, which gives you access to live streaming videos from both the cabin- and road-facing cameras. So you can check in on your vehicle and the driver in real-time, at any time.
As you watch the Live Stream, the Live Stream will be created as an Event, allowing the ability to replay your stream session at any time. It is auto-recording your Live Stream.
Accessing Live Streaming Video in the Web App
Open the Vehicle Details panel at the bottom of the Vehicles Tab. In the bottom right corner, click the ‘LTE Live Stream’ icon on the preview image.
A video viewing window will appear connected to the Raven+ cameras. Within this window, you can switch camera views (between cabin- and road-facing), by clicking on the ‘Camera Switch’ icon.
*Note: Compared to the Preview Images provided in the Details panel, Live Streaming video will use more data on the cellular network.
Video footage saved to the cloud
All live streaming sessions are automatically recorded and saved to your Raven Cloud storage. Each session will appear as a ‘Live Stream Event’ in the Event stack of both the Vehicles and History tabs. These videos are available to view and download at any time.
If you use the Raven Connected Mobile App to Live Stream, this will also create a Live Stream Event for you in your Raven Cloud.
Dispatch Messaging
Clicking on any of your vehicle icons will result in an Information Card to display. Within this information card, you gain valuable information at a glance, as well as send Dispatch Messages.
You can send real-time dispatch messages directly to the Raven+ of your choice. The message will appear on the display screen.
From the Web App, select a vehicle you wish to send a message to. The vehicle’s card will open up, revealing a Message box for you to select a pre-canned message or type a 15-character message of your own. Click the “paper airplane” icon to send. The message will appear for one minute across the screen and then as a bar at the top of the screen for 15 minutes or until cleared. If you send the message while the vehicle is off, the message will appear the next time it is on.
Status Icons
Real-time status icons notify you of common issues Raven+ may experience, allowing you to proactively identify problems and take action to resolve them immediately.
The following real-time status icons are available:
Loss of cellular connectivity
Raven+ unplugged
Vehicle Idling
SD card issue
Possible Impact
If a Raven+ unit experiences any of the issues above, a status icon will appear beside the vehicle’s name in the vehicles pop-out while in the Vehicles Tab of the Raven Web App. For example, if Raven+ is unplugged from one of your vehicles, the ‘Unplugged’ icon will appear. You can then take the necessary actions to get Raven+ back up and running, and also investigate why the unit was unplugged.
SD Card Status Icons
Additional information about SD card issues is provided through a tool tip when you hover over the status icon. More details are also available in the Vehicle Details panel.
The following are the potential SD card issues:
- SD card is missing
- SD card needs formatting
- SD card is not large enough
- SD card is full
Vehicle Status
Vehicle Statuses provide real-time information about a particular vehicle in your fleet.
To check on the status of a vehicle, from the Vehicles Tab, click on a vehicle from the map. A status box will appear, presenting the following information:
- If the car is driving or parked
- Who’s driving
- The live speed
- The live fuel level
- If there is an issue with the vehicle (if there is a DTC code, it will appear red; clicking on the box will provide insight into the possible cause)
You can also find this information and granular trip data on the left-hand side of the Vehicle Details panel.
Event Alerts
In addition to the status icons, when Raven detects events like being unplugged or a vehicle idling, an event will be added to the list in the Vehicle Details panel with road and cabin camera images, so you can confirm what occurred.
History
While the Vehicles Tab shows you the current location and status of your vehicles, the History Tab allows you to view information for past Trips.
Select the vehicle, date, and trip you would like to inspect. The Map View will display the path for that trip. Hover your mouse over the Trip Path to display the time the vehicle was at that location on the path.
The Event panel displays all Events for the selected Trip. Click on an Event to display images/video for that Event.
For Harsh Braking events, road and cabin-facing videos are automatically uploaded over the device’s cellular connection. Once a video is uploaded, it is stored in the cloud and can be accessed at any time.
The uploaded video is a lower-resolution video compared to the one stored on the device. The video files are very large, and we’ve tried to strike a balance between video quality, speed of the upload, and cellular data consumption. The original, high-resolution video is available on your Raven+ device.
Note: Raven+ loops its video storage, with the oldest videos being removed to make room for the newest footage. We strongly recommend an SD card for your Raven+.
Enhanced Video Access (EVA)
EVA provides an additional way to request any video in high definition available on the Raven device. The EVA tool allows users to visually select and download a clip around a segment of interest. Videos of up to a minute can be retrieved.
EVA can be accessed via the History Tab for any footage available on the Raven device.
To request a video from the EVA feature, open the Vehicle Details panel from the Trip Review tab and select “Request Video” in the ‘Events’ stack. The EVA timeline dragger will become available. Click and drag the green slider along the timeline, and a slug will appear over the blue trip timeline on the map and preview images above the slider. The color-coded dots on the timeline identify related events. Once you’ve identified the segment of interest, select the desired duration and click 'Request Download', then choose from which camera you would like the video to be retrieved. When the request is complete, the HD Video will be available from the 'Events' stack labeled 'User Video Request' at the time the recording took place.
Event Review
Event Review provides the necessary context for driver coaching initiatives. Users can select any event type and review by Driver or Vehicle over a specified timeframe with cabin and road-facing imagery. Event Review places the power in the hands of the fleet manager to determine which events displayed poor driving behavior and which should be shared for coachable moments.
How to Use it:
- From the web app, select Event Review under the History drop-down in the main menu.
- Select the desired Date Range, Vehicles, Event Types, and Event Statuses (e.g., Reviewed, Coaching Required, Dismissed), then click Apply.
- A list of matching events will be displayed, each with details and associated road- and cabin-facing images or video (for critical events).
- Users can also download available videos, view a summary of the event, view the complete trip in Trip Review, or export this data in a CSV.
Geofences
A Geofence is a point or area on a map that can trigger events. For example, you might identify a job site to generate alerts and reports when vehicles arrive or leave the site, and know how long they were at that location.
Raven provides an easy workflow for managing and creating reports based on the interaction of your vehicles and assets with these locations of interest.
Available Geofence configurations include:
- Point-based: a point with a radius, easily set up and configured.
- Polygonal: freeform drawn shapes or uploaded coordinates where geofences require enhanced specificity.
To create a Geofence:
For point-based:
- From the web app, select the ‘Geofences’ menu item from the left-hand side.
- Select ‘Add Geofence’. You will see a red outline around the map when in edit mode.
- Drag the map or search for the location where you would like to place the geofence.
- To change the size of the geofence, click and drag the arrows.
- Adjust geofence settings under the details panel, including name, color, expiration, and notifications, then click ‘Save Location’.
For polygonal:
- From the web app, select the ‘Geofence’ menu item from the left-hand side.
- Select ‘Add Geofence’.
- Switch the type of geofence by selecting ‘Polygon’. You can either choose to upload your own by selecting ‘Import Polygon’.
- To import a polygon:
- Select the ‘Import Polygon’ button.
- Select a file from your local device. The file must include a geometry field with a coordinates array containing the polygon’s coordinates. A variety of file types are accepted so long as the structure is maintained.
- To draw your own:
- Drag the map or search for the location where you would like to place the Geofence.
- Click anywhere on the map to begin drawing your geofence. Each click will add a new point to your geofence. If you need to restart the shape, click the garbage can icon to the right of your screen. Once satisfied with your shape, select enter/return on your keyboard.
- To adjust or delete a vertex, select one of the polygon’s points. Click and drag to modify its position, or click the trash can icon to remove the vertex.
- Adjust geofence settings under the details panel, including name, color, expiration, and notifications, then click ‘Save Location’.
- To import a polygon:
To edit a geofence:
- Click on the geofence from the list.
- Select the ‘Edit Location’ button.
- Adjust any settings following the same instructions as above.
- Select ‘Save Location’.
Notes:
- Polygonal geofence points must not intersect. If intersections occur, an error will be generated, preventing you from saving the geofence.
- Recommended area size should be a minimum of 0.0314 km²; areas smaller could result in erroneous notification if cellular signal strength is weak.
- Geofence areas cannot be created if they are smaller than 0.00282 km².
- Geofence Enter / Exit Events will appear on your Events Stack within the Vehicles and Histories Tabs. Since Geofences will often change or be deleted, we keep track of what Geofences existed at the time of each Trip and display these Geofences within the Trip History view.
Reporting
To generate reports, click on the Reports tab and select your report of interest.
The Reporting tools provide Trip, Stop, Activity, Event, Geofence, Device, Asset, and Vehicle DTC reports.

Driver Alert Settings
Driver Alerts sound a chime, alerting the driver whenever a notable event occurs. The most common Audible event is the speeding event.
Audible Alerts are ‘Enabled’ by default. To disable Audible Alerts, from the ‘Driver Alerts’ section, use the toggle button and disable 'Audible chimes for events’.
Event Settings
Speeding Events and Thresholds
Raven tracks your vehicles' speeds and how fast they are being driven relative to the posted speed limits.
Within the ‘Events’ Section of ‘Global Configurations’, you can enable Speeding Events to alert you when one of your vehicles goes over the limit. You can also set a Speeding Threshold to limit Speeding Event notifications to more significant overages, rather than be alerted every time a vehicle goes one mile (or kilometre) over.
You can select either an absolute- or percentage-based Speeding Threshold.
To enable Speeding Events, use the toggle below ‘Speeding’. Use the dropdown menu to choose an absolute-based (mph/kph) or percentage-based (percent) threshold. Next, enter the amount you want the threshold set at.
AI Detection Features
Raven's AI-enabled features allow users to monitor and reduce risky driving behaviors through real-time alerts and event tracking. Each detection feature works by continuously monitoring the driver while the vehicle is being driven. When detected, a small toast widget appears on the right side of Raven's screen and beeps, alerting the driver. Simultaneously, notifications are delivered to the Raven Apps, notifying management of the detection. All detections will appear in the Events stack from the dashboard and Trip Review tabs and are searchable in Event Review.
The following detection features are available:
Toast Widgets - Cabin
|
Camera Obscured Monitoring for any object obstructing the cabin-camera view |
|
|
Cellphone Detected Monitoring for instances where the driver has a cellphone in hand |
|
|
Fatigue Monitoring the driver for eyes closed and yawning while driving |
|
|
Smoking Monitoring for any vehicle occupant smoking, even while stopped |
|
|
Distracted Monitoring for instances where the driver looks down or away from the road |
|
|
Eating/Drinking Monitoring for instances where the driver is eating or drinking |
Toast Widgets - Road
|
Tailgating Monitoring for instances where the driver is following too closely |
By default, AI events are disabled. To enable them:
- From the Web App, select the Settings tab from the menu, scroll down to the 'Events' section, and click to expand.
- Scroll to the desired section and toggle on to start receiving alerts when drivers interact with their devices.
For more information, check out The Spotlight.
Event Threshold Settings
Raven users can customize the appropriate sensitivity to their vehicle size and satisfaction. From the Web App, users can now Enable or Disable and set thresholds for Aggressive Acceleration, Harsh Braking, Harsh Cornering, and Possible Impact events. You do not need to adjust the setting if you're content with the existing notification triggers. For more information on Settings, check out The Spotlight.
- From the Web App, select the Settings tab from the menu, and scroll down to the 'Events' section. A complete list of configurable settings will be displayed.
- Toggle to turn on or off an Event, then click and drag the slider to adjust your ideal sensitivity level. The further to the left the slider is located, the less sensitive Raven will react to the selected Event. Alternatively, the further to the right, the more susceptible Raven will be to events.
- If you're unsure of your desired sensitivity level, there are vehicle-type indicators along the slider to help indicate the typical type of vehicle that is suitable for the level of sensitivity. You can also enter a value to set the sensitivity level. Select 'Apply' to change the sensitivity level or 'Discard Changes' to keep the settings as they were.
Unit of Measure
Whether you’re more comfortable reading metric or imperial units from the Raven device screen, you can select your Distance and Speed, and Temperature measures.
To do so, from the ‘Units of Measure’ section of ‘Global Configurations’ select from Imperial or Metric for Distance and Speed measurements and Celsius or Fahrenheit for temperature. Your selection will automatically be saved.
Wi-Fi
You can enable/disable Wi-Fi Hotspot connectivity on your Ravens.

Add additional users to your Trusted Circle
One of the most powerful features of Raven is its ability to have multiple users monitoring a single, or multiple vehicles. For example, two supervisors can monitor a single vehicle. You can also share access with your driver, who can monitor the same vehicle.
From your Web App, click on “Admin”. Under the “My Ravens” heading, you will see an “Invite Users” button beside each vehicle. Click on this link and provide the email address of the person you wish to share access with.
You can stop sharing access at any time if you no longer want to share your vehicle status.
With App Sharing, when you invite the recipient to install the Raven Connected app on their mobile device, the vehicle you’ve invited them to view will be visible for them to track. If they already have the Raven Connected app installed, your vehicle will be added to their list.
If you only want to share the current trip with someone, you should use the Trip Sharing feature. Raven Trip Sharing allows you to temporarily share your trip with anyone you want. When the trip expires, so does the sharing.
Raven Videos
Raven+ has two cameras: an HD, road-facing camera and a night vision-enabled cabin-facing camera. There are four main types of videos that you can create and access:
Live Stream Video: Access either camera in real-time, regardless of if the vehicle is parked or driving, on or off. Live access to the cameras is available through the Web App.
To access a Live Stream from the Mobile App:
|
|
To access a Live Stream from the Web App, click on the LTE icon in the preview image panel. See the section on Live Streaming for further information.
Historic Video Streaming
Historic Video Streaming enables continuous footage to be made remotely available via the web app for your review. Once you have streamed that video, it is saved to the cloud and accessible at any time.
Accessing Historic Video Streaming
From the web app, click on the 'History' tab. In the 'Calendar' panel, select the Vehicle, Date, and Trip of interest. If the continuous video footage from this Trip is still available on Raven's storage, it will be available for remote viewing.
To choose what point in the Trip you would like to start streaming from, hover your cursor along the map's breadcrumb trail. The time of day each part of the Trip took place will appear. When routes have been repeated during a trip, the direction travelled and time of each occurrence will populate, allowing you to select the correct point to begin streaming from. Once you find the part of the Trip you want to review, click the icon to begin streaming.
Using the arrows, skip forward and backward by 15-second increments to review the whole Trip. You can also pause/play the video at any time.
To download HD streaming clips, open a Historical Streaming session. Once you’ve identified the point of interest, pause the video. A download button will become available. Downloading from this point will select 15 seconds before the pause and 15 seconds afterwards. A dialogue box will appear confirming your request. Once confirmed, the video will be pushed to the cloud. A User Video Request event will become available in the Events stack. Here, you can replay and download the clip anytime.
In both the 'Vehicles' and 'History' tabs, you can also access Historic Video Streaming by selecting an Event from the 'Vehicle Details' panel. Click the icon in the bottom right corner of the video player to view the footage from the Event of interest.
Video footage is saved to the cloud
All Historic Video Streams are automatically saved to your Raven Cloud storage. These videos will appear as a 'Streaming Event' in the 'History' tab in the Event stack. These videos are available to view and download at any time.
Remote Cloud Video
Raven's Remote Cloud Video captures video footage from all detected events, from both the cabin- and road-facing cameras, and is immediately available, remotely, for review in the web app.
In the Raven web app, you will see a small 'play' icon beside all Events, indicating video footage of the event is available for you to upload/play.
An opaque icon means that the video is already in the cloud and ready to be played. A transparent icon indicates that the video is available for remote download from the Raven device. Click on the icon in the preview pane to upload/play the video.
Certain events are designated as "critical" (e.g., "Possible Accident", "Harsh Braking"), and their video will be automatically uploaded without any actions required by the user. All other events will have the transparent icon requiring action to download.
Once any video is uploaded, it's stored in the cloud and can be accessed at any time from the web app.
Continuous videos
Raven records RAW HD footage from its road- and cabin-facing cameras. These video files are quite large, and we highly recommend an SD card for use with your Raven+. There are different model configurations available, ranging from 1.5 hrs. to 50 hrs. of video storage. Please inquire about our higher capacity configurations.
If an SD card is present, video is written to the card. To access the video, remove the SD card and insert it into your SD card reader on your laptop or desktop.
You can also use Raven+ like an external hard drive and read the videos from the unit directly, using a micro USB cable:
|
1. Connect your Raven to your PC using a micro USB cable. |
2. Once your Raven is connected and turned on, open the file explorer on your PC |
3. Find and select your Raven from the list. |
4. Double-click Internal Storage. The raw video files will appear in the Videos folder |
For Harsh Braking events, associated videos from both cameras will be automatically uploaded to the cloud and accessible via the Web App.
The preview video uploaded over a cellular connection is a lower-resolution video than is stored on the device. The video files are very large, and we’ve tried to strike a balance between video quality, speed of the upload, and cellular data consumption. The original, high-resolution video is available on your Raven+ device. Videos can take a minute or more to upload.
Note: Raven+ loops its video storage, with the oldest videos being removed to make room for the newest footage. We strongly recommend an SD card for your Raven+; one that meets the requirements for encoding two concurrent video streams.
Trip Sharing
“I’m on my way. Will be there soon. Here’s a link so you can follow me.”
Trip Sharing allows you to send a link to anyone, so they can live-track the location of your vehicle and see what you’re seeing by accessing the road-facing camera.
From either the Mobile or Web App, use the Share Trip feature to create a link to your trip. Send this link via SMS, email, or other communication channels.
The recipient will receive this link, which they can open in any browser. They will see a map of your trip updated in real-time, along with image previews taken from your road-facing camera.
When the trip expires, the link also expires, and sharing is terminated. The link will no longer work after the trip ends. Raven considers a trip to end one hour after the car is turned off.
Sharing a trip will send a link to the current trip. If the vehicle is parked, then the next trip will be shared.
From the Web App, open the Vehicle Details panel, and select the “Trip Share” button. A pop-up will appear where you can select from a list of different methods to share the trip.
Raven Screen Status Icons
Several icons appear on Raven’s screens to indicate the current status of Raven and some potential issues. These icons appear automatically on Raven’s screen when the device senses a behaviour change. Below is a list of icons and what they mean.
