Comprehensive Guide to Raven Video Storage and Retrieval
Raven continuously records video while the vehicle's engine is running, so you never miss an incident. In most cases footage can be retrieved remotely. When required it can be retrieved physically from the local SD card.
How Raven Records and Stores Video
Understanding how Raven manages storage helps ensure critical footage is retrieved before it gets overwritten.
Continuous Recording: When the vehicle's engine is on, video is continuously recorded directly to the SD card in 5-minute increments.
Storage Capacity & Quality: By default, video quality is set to HD, which allows for approximately 60 hours of footage to be stored on a standard 256GB card.
-
Extending Your Lookback Period: If you need to retain footage longer before it overwrites, you have two options:
Adjust Settings: Slightly reduce the video quality under Settings > Camera in the web app.
Upgrade Hardware: Expand your storage by upgrading the SD card to a 512GB or 1TB card.
Remote Video Retrieval
You can remotely download any video as long as the footage is still available on the SD card and the Raven unit is online.
1. Cloud Video
Recommended if you know that a Raven event occurred
If Raven detects a critical event (harsh braking or possible impact), that video segment automatically uploads to the cloud. Other events (such as speeding or cellphone use) are flagged in the system, but their videos are not uploaded automatically.
How to retrieve it:
- From the web app, navigate to 'Trip Review', select the desired trip, and open the details panel.
- Next to the event you’d like to watch or save, click the 'play' icon.
- An opaque icon means that the video is already in the cloud.
- A transparent icon indicates that the video is available for remote download from the Raven.
- To download the footage, click the download button in the bottom right corner of the video feed.
- Cloud video clips can also be accessed anytime in 'Event Review' or for the live trip in the dashboard.
2. Enhanced Video Access
Recommended if you know the date and roughly the time or location
Use this feature to retrieve continuous video segments that aren't linked to any specific triggered event.
How to retrieve it:
- Open the Vehicle Details panel from the Trip Review tab and select “Request Video” in the 'Events' stack. The EVA timeline dragger will become available.
Note: If you select an event before clicking Request Video, the timeline will automatically adjust to the time of that event. - Click and drag the green slider along the timeline, and a slug will appear over the blue trip timeline on the map and preview images above the slider. The colour-coded dots on the timeline identify related events. Preview images will appear above the timeline helping you narrow down the segment of interest.
- Once you’ve identified the segment of interest, select the desired duration and click 'Request Download', then choose from which camera you would like the video to be retrieved.
- When the request is complete, the HD Video will be available from the 'Events' stack labeled 'User Video Request' at the time the recording took place. The video can be reviewed from the web app or downloaded for sharing.
3. Historic Streaming
Recommended if you know the date, a narrower timeframe, and vehicle
If you aren't sure of the exact pinpoint time but have a general idea of when an event occurred, use Historic Streaming to review the timeline.
How to retrieve it via the Trip Review breadcrumb:
- From the web app click 'Trip Review' under the 'History' tab.
- On the Calendar panel, select the vehicle of interest, then the date and trip you would like to review.
- From the map select the point in the Trip that you would like to start streaming from by hovering your cursor over the breadcrumb trail on the map. A timestamp of the Trip will appear. Once you find the part of the trip you want to review, click the timestamp to begin streaming.
- Using the arrows, skip forwards and backward in 15-second increments. You can also pause or play the video at any time.
- Pausing the video enables Historical Streaming Downloads. A download button will become available. Downloading from this point will retrieve an HD video from 15 seconds before the pause and 15 seconds afterward. The streaming session can also be rewatched and downloaded at a lower quality from the events stack.
How to Historically Stream via the Event panel:
- Historical Video Streaming can also be started via the Event panel on both the 'Vehicle Details' tab on the Dashboard and the 'Trip Review' tab.
- From the 'Event' panel scroll through the Events to decide at what point in the trip you would like to stream.
- Click the Historical Video Streaming icon in the lower right corner of the preview image to begin your session.
Physical Video Retrieval
If remote options are unavailable or the device is offline, you can pull raw footage directly from the SD card.
How to retrieve it:
Gently remove the SD card from the Raven unit.
Insert the card into a computer using an SD card reader or adapter.
Open the SD card directory in your file browser and locate the videos folder.
Copy the required raw footage files from the card directly to your computer.
